about

Kopow is keenly open to the life force of nature. But he didn’t realize the impact that several trips to Kenya would have on him, absorbed by the complexity and uniqueness of the country, cutting so much deeper than simply a safari postcard.

This EP tries to scratch the surface of the ultimate complexity: culture. Its celebrations, contradictions and perplexities. It doesn’t claim to have the answers and welcomes interpretation, inviting you to search beyond and find your own significance in these 5 tracks. You will hear percussive beats, warming traditional songs and shimmering melodies, each with their own rhythm and multiple-layers, reminiscent of the work of Ozferti, Débruit or the energy of Clap! Clap!

Akiba, a Kenyan artist, in his characteristic style of mixing collage and painting, uses his eyes and hands to make subtle graphical links with a swarming and indecisive vision of his country. Also, the video clip accompanying the track “Chasing the Leopard” is directed by Chloé Zurbach, made from shots of local bike riders, documenting their passion and talent, driving the point of the track home.
